Public Records Requests​

Mecklenburg County has established a Public Records Policy to affirm the public's right to access County records and has established a standardized procedure for County staff to follow when providing ​information to the public. These guidelines also include a  schedule of fees which will be assessed to cover the cost of responding to public records requests.

The following is a list of common public records requests:

Birth or Death Certificates

Business Privilege Licenses

Business Privilege Licenses may be searched for on the Tax Collections website. At a minimum, three characters of the business name, full owner name, or the street number are required to submit a search.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Records

To obtain Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) records, please contact CMPD’s Crime Records section at 704-336-2848.

Crime reports can be accessed online by a search using the victim/owner’s name and/or the complaint number.

Crash reports can be accessed online​ by a search entering the report number, incident date, driver, and/or location.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System (CMS) Records

Mecklenburg County does not house records related to Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. To obtain information related to CMS, visit the CMS School Records website.

Court Records – Civil, Criminal, Traffic Violations

Mecklenburg County does not maintain Mecklenburg County Court records or documents. for civil, criminal or other court related inquiries, including traffic violations, please contact the Clerk of Court’s office directly at 704-686-0404 

Criminal Background Checks

A name-based criminal record check may be obtained by contacting the Clerk of Court’s office at 704-686-0404.

Divorce Records

You can obtain information regarding a divorce, along with other court-related records by contacting the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Court online or at 704-686-0400. 

Marriage Records

To obtain a marriage license, please fill out the online Marriage Application.

You can search for a marriage record by using the Register of Deeds’ online Marriage Index

Property Records

Real property information can be accessed by owner name, address, or parcel identification number using POLARIS3G.

Recorded real estate documents (e.g. deeds, mortgages) can be researched online through the Register of Deeds Web Access​ or by visiting the office located at

Tax Information

Information regarding property valuation can accessed by owner name, address, or parcel identification number using POLARIS3G.



If your public records request does not fall into one of the categories above, please follow the instructions below to submit a request to Mecklenburg County Public Information. Once your request has been submitted, a representative will respond with a written estimate of the approximate time required to address the request.


All records requests must be submitted in writing - either online or by downloading, printing and mailing a request form - and should contain the following information:
  1. Date of the request;
  2. Requestor’s name;
  3. Requestor’s full mailing address: 
    (name, organization, street address, city, state, ZIP)
  4. Requestor’s day time phone number;
  5. A complete description of the record or records requested;
  6. The title and date of the requested record, if known;
  7. The location of the requested record, if known; 
  8. Whether the requestor intends to inspect the records or to obtain a photocopy. A fee is required for photocopies as set forth in the procedures.
