Learning Gardens

The Learning Garden project was selected as a winner of the national Meet Me at the Park campaign and will receive a $20,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney/ABC Television Group and ESPN. Community members voted for the winning project throughout Earth Month in April.

The Learning Garden project will create pollinator, ozone and vegetable gardens at ten recreation centers within the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. These gardens will be utilized for education, exploration and replication as participants will be able to create gardens at their own homes based on education and experiences they gather in these gardens.

The ten recreation centers participating in the project are:

 - Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center

 - Methodist Home Recreation Center

 - Sugaw Creek Recreation Center

 - West Charlotte Recreation Center

 - Elon Recreation Center

 - Marion Diehl Recreation Center

 - Tuckaseegee Recreation Center

 - Mallard Creek Recreation Center

 - Ivory/Baker Recreation Center

The project is in its initial phase which includes doing a site assessment of the facilities which includes  current amenities and programming opportunities.

Stay tuned for more updates on the project and how you can be a part of build days, installation days and programs in these gardens!
