Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation has been working closely with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department (CMUD) to reduce the impact of the sewer project on adjacent public facilities such as Boyce Park and McAlpine Creek Park. The sewer project must run through McAlpine Creek Greenway due to the presence of adjacent sewer and natural gas pipeline corridors. This project will enhance system performance, provide increased sewer capacity for present and future needs, and protect the water quality in McAlpine Creek. 

Pre-Construction Activities for the Relief Sewer
In the next couple of months, the sewer contractor will be working along the greenway to complete rock profiling. They will be boring small holes to locate subsurface rock. This does not signal the start of construction, it is part of their preparation for construction so they can more accurately schedule and plan their work. Some clearing of trees will be required along Irvins Creek. We are working with the contractor to avoid greenway closure of the main greenway trail and accommodate scheduled events and greenway users. Significant clearing of trees will be required along Irvins Creek and the granular trail that connects to Tower Point Drive. This clearing operation should begin by the end of April and last only 2-3 weeks. Closing this access trail will be necessary during this time.

Greenway Closed During Construction 
The Upper McAlpine Creek Greenway (McAlpine Creek Park to Sardis Road) will be closed during construction which is expected to begin mid to late 2013. The project should take about two years to complete. List of open greenways

Note: McAlpine Creek Park and Campbell Creek Greenway will not be impacted by construction. 5K trail events occurring in McAlpine Creek Park between August 1 and December 15 will not be interrupted.
