Charlotte, NC—Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will end DAILY operation of its outdoor swimming pools for this season TODAY, August 24, 2009 at 6pm. The outdoor pools are:
Both pools will operate WEEKENDS ONLY for the remainder of this season on August 29-30 and September 5-6, 11am-5pm each Saturday and 1pm–5pm each Sunday. Admission is $1 each day. The last day of outdoor pool operations this year will be Monday, Labor Day, September 7, 12noon–6pm. The pools will then close for the season.
For the second straight year, Park and Recreation offered free morning swim lessons this year for youngsters, ages 3-12, at the two outdoor pools. The staff taught 2750 lessons, about 200 more than last year.
James Alsop, Director of Enterprise Services said he is especially proud of this public service because many minority youngsters learned about water safety. “National statistics show minorities are three times more likely to drown or nearly-drown,” Alsop said. “We believe the kids who take our swim lessons are better equipped to recognize and avoid the danger of drowning.”
SPRAYGROUNDS Park and Recreation spraygrounds will continue to operate daily, 10am-8pm, until about October 1. The exact closing date for the season depends on the weather.
Spraygrounds are FREE. So they are especially great recreation for youngsters in a tough economy! Spraygrounds offer water sprays, nozzles, streams and spouts for children (and sometimes adults) to play and frolic under. Sprayground locations are in:
