Charlotte, NC-- Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites the public to donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges to help raise money for the annual Reedy Creek Nature Center Hummingbird Festival. The nature center has arranged with the Phoneraiser company to buy and recycle donated items.
"We're very excited about this program," says nature center staff member Staci Clark. "This not only benefits the center by allowing us to host a special community event but it also helps preserve the environment."
The Phoneraiser company specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology materials. It promises unwanted cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or be refurbished and reused. Cell phones and inkjet cartridges often contain toxic lead, arsenic, zinc, and other hazardous chemicals. Recycling keeps these materials from polluting the environment. One improperly disposed of cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water.
Donations to this program are tax deductible for many individuals and families.
All cell phones and inkjet cartridges are accepted. Donate cell phones and cartridges during regular business hours at:
- Reedy Creek Nature Center, 2900 Rocky River Road
- Park and Recreation's main offices, 5841 Brookshire Blvd.
The third annual Reedy Creek Nature Center Hummingbird Festival will be held on August 28 this year. For more information contact Staci Clark at 704 598-8857.
