DEMONSTRATIONS AND JUDGING OF “FRIESIAN” HORSES FREE TO PUBLIC AT LATTA EQUESTRIAN CENTER SEPT. 14-15

September 8, 2009

Charlotte, NC-- Latta Equestian Center hosts an unusual gathering, demonstration and judging of about 70 Friesian horses, September 14 and 15, 2009 at 6201 Sample Road in Huntersville, inside Latta Nature Preserve. Demonstration and judging events are FREE and open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to see so many high quality Friesian horses in one place in the United States.

Demonstrations by the horses will be presented Monday evening, September 14 at 7pm showing the horses in:

  • Dressage (precision movements of horse and rider)
  • Saddleseat  (showstyle prancing)
  • Driving (in harness with cart or carriage)
  • At liberty (free in the ring).

Actual judging of the horses according to exacting standards begins at 8am on Tuesday, September 15 and runs through early afternoon.  Mares, geldings, stallions, colts and fillies will be judged and rated. Only a small fraction qualify for the highest ratings.

Friesian horses were originally bred in Holland and are known for gentle dispositions, noble looks and thick manes, tails and leg feathering. They are all black. The only white markings allowed are a small star on their forehead.  Top Friesians are valuable horses and might sell for as much as $75,000-$100,000 or more fully grown and trained. Many horses, especially foals (young horses) at this show will be offered for sale by owners.

Each year official judges from the Dutch Friesian Studbook come to America to judge the Friesians in the United States.  This judging or keuring (Dutch for judging) is the purpose of this event at Latta.  About 20 keurings are held in America each year. This is one of the largest on the east coast. All horses presented are registered with The Friesian Horse Association of North America (FHANA).

Latta Equestian Center is owned by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department and is run by a private contractor called Country Time Carriages.  For more information please about the Friesian events, contact Dan Hermann, www.shadynookfarm.com dan@shadynookfarm.com or 828-712-7360.
