Charlotte, NC –Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites anyone interested in the First Ward Park to attend a community meeting to review its master plan on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 6pm at 301 East 9th Street, Suite 100, in uptown Charlotte.
First Ward Park is a partnership between Levine Properties, UNC-Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte. The new 4½ acre park will developed across from ImaginOn, between 7th, 9th and Brevard Streets, just east of the light rail tracks. Part of the park will be built atop an underground public/private parking deck which will serve the new UNCC uptown campus, future residential units and office/retail space.
First Ward Park is one portion of the overall $700 million dollar Levine investment in First Ward. Six separate projects will be underway in and around the park as it is developed: The new UNCC building, raising the elevation of 8th and Brevard Streets, a new section of 10th Street, the new Market Street and an underground parking deck.
Planning for First Ward Park moves forward as the municipal development agreements are completed and design of the underground parking deck and street infrastructure are finalized. The design team has enlisted nationally known urban park design firm, JP Shadley & Associates, to refine the park plan, to add a layer of depth and richness.
Preliminary Time Table for First Ward Park and the UNCC Uptown Campus:
- UNCC Uptown Campus – now under construction
- Completed park master plan – April 2010
- Underground parking deck – start construction as early as this fall
