Charlotte- NC - Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Charlotte Alumnae Chapter, Communities In Schools will host the 2012 Community Day Expo: Communities United in Mind Body & Spirit on Sat., April 28, at West Charlotte Recreation Center
, 2401 Kendall Drive, Charlotte, NC. The public is encouraged to attend this free event, from noon to 3 p.m.
The “twist” to this health fair is that it serves as the culminating event of a 10-week fitness challenge between the Lincoln Heights and University Park communities. During the challenge, the neighborhoods committed to improve their health by participating in weekly weigh-ins, weekly exercise sessions (Zumba, yoga, line dancing and strength training to name a few), seminars and daily journaling to help them achieve their weight loss/fitness goals.
The goal is to offer a variety of exercises to enable participants to identify a style that resonates with them, in hopes they will continue after the challenge ends. There are 50 people are enrolled in the challenge, the first of its kind. The winning community will be designated fittest community by the sorority. In addition, individual winners will be awarded prizes to keep them encouraged.
Community Day is designed to educate attendees on health disparities, specifically those impacting minorities, and to enlighten and inspire adoption of healthier lifestyles in a fun-filled entertaining day. The event includes interactive workshops (nutrition, exercise, mental wellness and health benefits), healthy cooking information, community gardening, drug awareness and live entertainment. Further, attendees can win door prizes; and children can participate in the Kids Zone.
