County Board Approves Amendment to Park and Recreation Concealed Carry Ordinance
The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners on May 7, 2013 approved an amendment to section 29 of the Park and Recreation Facilities Ordinance relating to the possession of handguns in certain facilities.
The amendment proposed by Commissioner Karen Bentley, and adopted by the Board, brings the referenced section of the Ordinance in line with North Carolina General Statute 14-415.23 (effective December 1, 2011). The statute allows concealed carry of handguns in parks, recreation centers, nature centers and areas of business as long as they are not associated with school sites. Individuals must have a concealed carry permit. The new measure goes into effect immediately.

All other weapons remain prohibited in and on park properties.

The open or concealed carrying of weapons by duly authorized law enforcement personnel in parks is not affected by this amendment.
