At Activate! we went from essentially recycling nothing 18 months ago to recycling better than 80% of our office paper, cans, bottles, and cardboard. I feel we can probably achieve 90% this year with a few subtle changes and reminders in the office environment. The next step is reducing our use of non-recyclable items in the office, mostly in the kitchen.
Post and/or distribute miscellaneous Waste Reduction Information/posters
Ensure site waste reduction activities are implemented
We have placed the old red recycle bins strategically throughout our office to encourage recycling in common areas such as the mail area and kitchen. Each desk has a recycle bin as well for office paper. Through signage and discussions on what can be recycled, we hope to continue to reduce the amount of trash going into landfills.
We purchase recycled paper towels for our kitchen as well as non-bleached recycled towels for our bathroom. Where possible, we use recycled paper for copiers and use recycled toner cartridges.

We teamed with Mecklenburg County 2 years ago and began a recycling program. We conducted meetings with representatives from Mecklenburg County and our residents to educate and encourage recycling.
Our Phase I parking lot was seal coated using 100% asphalt based sealer. The VOC’s for asphalt based sealer are drastically less than the standard coal tar sealant. Also the asphalt does not have the harmful PAH’s that coal tar has. The property replaced the all breezeway lighting with CFL bulbs through the Duke Power energy program. Lighting was replaced with energy efficient bulbs in all units.

Bank of America occupies 6.58MM square feet of office space in Mecklenburg County and diverts 207,606 lbs. of waste from landfills through recycling and composting programs. BAC strives to reduce waste in all of its occupied space, which has led the Bank to create all-encompassing waste reduction programs for all of its real estate nationwide. Lincoln Harris is a facility partner to Bank of America and provides Property Management and Engineering services to all of the Bank of America properties in the Southeast. The success of the waste reduction programs within Bank of America space has been a joint venture for Lincoln Harris and Bank of America. Waste and recycling programs in Bank of America's Uptown portfolio have resulted in significant waste reduction and financial savings. BAC recycles a significant amount of workplace recyclables; in 2012 alone, 187 tons were recycled from the Uptown Charlotte portfolio. With the completion of One Bank of America Center in 2010, the implementation of a composting program at the site has served as a learning and testing ground for effective separation, communication, and signage requirements to encourage usage of the service. Lessons learned from One Bank of America Center will help support success across the enterprise as the Bank expands composting services in support of its goal to divert 70% of its global waste from landfill by 2015. In 2012, Bank of America was able to use the knowledge gained from One Bank of America Center’s composting program to start composting in multiple markets across the US. The composting program continues to grow and is a major focus of waste diversion efforts in Charlotte and across the nation. In addition to composting, BAC works closely with its waste vendors to proactively right size waste services on an ongoing basis. Continuing to evaluate Bank of America's waste services forces all parties to understand how effective the recycling program is working and when improvements are needed. Several of BAC’s Uptown buildings have been voluntarily audited per the BAC waste audit program. The results of this program are what enable the company to adequately understand waste stream components, volumes, and areas of improvement. The establishment of the company’s composting program, increased education, and rightsizing of waste management services has not only dramatically increased diversion of waste from landfill, but it has also dramatically reduced the cost of waste services over the last few years. At the Bank of America Corporate Center, improved waste management practices have driven more than $16,000 in annual savings since 2012.
Bank of America has implemented many policies and practices that support Wipe Out Waste Ambassador initiatives. BAC actively promotes waste reduction and has shown dedication to reducing waste sent to landfills by creating a goal for 70% waste diversion by the end of 2015. Bank of America is also in full support of the Envision Charlotte program and has employees that serve in positions of leadership within the organization. Both Lincoln Harris and Bank of America are actively involved in civic organizations that promote recycling and waste diversion. Employees of Bank of America serve on the Keep North Carolina Beautiful and Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful Boards and Lincoln Harris is represented on the Keep Charlotte Beautiful Board. Bank of America strives to incorporate the values from these organizations into their business practices by actively supporting recycling of ongoing consumables and electronics.
BAC’s Uptown Charlotte portfolio serves as a testing ground for practices and policies that have later been spread across Bank of America's vast global real estate portfolio. In 2007 the Uptown portfolio piloted green cleaning practices which have since been rolled out at approximately 70 million square feet of real estate across the country. BAC has a commitment to green cleaning practices and requires Cleaning and Janitorial (C&J) vendors to implement BAC’s requested environmental practices. C&J providers must clean all sites using green cleaning products, recycled paper products, and equipment without adding additional cost. Included in those contracts are performance metrics and reporting requirements to validate their commitment and compliance.
Bank of America, in conjunction with Lincoln Harris, strives to educate Bank of America employees on the importance and impact of waste reduction and recycling. Property teams in Mecklenburg County send out frequent reminders to tenants of the buildings about the available recycling and/or composting programs. Bank of America also engages its employees through the MyEnvironment program to help spread cultural changes that drive up recycling and waste diversion rates. There are over 1,500 MyEnvironment ambassadors in Mecklenburg County. These groups hold monthly meetings and annual events such as the WasteLess lunch (a program to educate building occupants on the amounts of waste that workday lunches create) to help encourage Bank of America associates to recycle and compost.

We started about a year ago putting recycling containers throughout the shop to collect paper and cardboard; we currently have expanded to plastics and aluminum. We worked with O'Leary to come up with ideas and training programs to help our employees get involved and we now average about 50% of our products that used to go into landfills now get recycled, and not only that but we get a cost return on those products.
We turned our trash roll-off container into a recycle-only container for our paper and cardboard products. Our trash container is now a small bin, so we encourage our employees instead of filling up trash cans; let’s see if we can fill up a large roll-off recycle container. We also inform our employees that not only does recycling help with landfills but we save trees, water, landfill space, oil, and electricity, which we post every month. We're currently working with O'Leary to incorporate more items in the future.
We had a training class put on by Robin Turner at O'Leary that really opened up a lot of peoples’ eyes about landfills and what it's doing to our planet. We also put up signs to help encourage employees to do their part and what can and can't be recycled.

Paper is recycled and reused. Cardboard, magazines, paper are disposed of in recycling bins. Envelopes (used) are re-used instead of post-it notes. Batteries and ink cartridges are recycled/disposed of to vendors that recycle them. Plastics are recycled. Restroom and office supplies purchased are green products.
As a dental team, we reduce the amount of waste produced by using less paper, reusing materials when possible, eating off of dishes instead of paper products, recycling and buying dental and office products that are biodegradable and/or made from recycled products.
Our commitment to buying “Green Products” has increased costs in some area, however, our re-use of others have decreased our costs… especially with regard to paper consumption/use.

Celgard has established programs and procedures for minimizing the amount of solid waste sent to landfill and to reclaim all materials identified as having characteristics that would enable those materials to be reused, recycled, or reclaimed in an environmentally sound way. Celgard maintains a Waste Disposal Guide as an easy reference to disposal information. For example, the facility has established locations and receptacles for the collection of office paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastics, used oil, batteries, fluorescent lights, and many other waste streams it generates
Celgard promotes active participation by all employees in measures they can take both at work and at home to recycle and minimize wastes by providing continuous communications and guidance resources to all employees. For example, a Waste Recycle Guide is available to all employees for instructions on disposal or recycling of over 100 various types of wastes generated on site. Celgard's commitment to environmental stewardship is further communicated to its customers and to the community on its company website and initial orientation upon entry to its facilities.
Celgard makes continuing efforts to purchase recycled and recyclable materials for use in processes and packaging materials. For example, Celgard utilizes plastic pallets made with recycled content, environmental friendly housekeeping and maintenance supplies, packaging materials that are recyclable, corrugated cardboard made with recycled contents, and purchased materials in recyclable containers which can be used for another purpose internally.
All new employees receive general waste disposal instructions upon hiring and annually thereafter. Designated employees receive training for management and disposal of various regulated waste streams including hazardous, universal, used oil, etc. Celgard's commitment is further illustrated through maintaining a certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standard, ensuring compliance with applicable waste management regulations, and fostering an environment where all employees understand the importance of protecting our natural resources.

While we had had a recycling program on campus prior to last year, participation was half-hearted at best. As such, the entire program was rejuvenated, updated, and expanded to include single stream recycling, specialty items recycling, composting, waste reduction, and energy reduction. Additionally, we have moved to purchasing green cleaning products, recycled products, organic land/garden maintenance products, and locally grown/raised food products. With the full support from the school administration, overall buy-in from faculty and students has been great. The big success story is that Charlotte Latin’s waste stream is now 52% recyclables and compost and only 48% garbage destined for a landfill. Just one year ago garbage (trash) represented 90% of Charlotte Latin’s waste stream. While there is room for further improvement, this is a substantial one year decrease. It should also be noted that everyone in the community is responsible for the proper disposal of materials - we do not have maintenance or janitorial staff dedicated to the sorting of materials. Therefore, even our youngest students (4 and 5 year olds) are expected to properly compost and recycle materials on campus. In addition to the single stream recycling and composting successes noted above, in the last school year alone the Charlotte Latin community properly recycled (and thus kept out of the landfill) the following: 821 pounds of Batteries 85 Cell phones 621 Printer cartridges 63 compact florescent light bulbs >250 2', 4', 8' florescent tube lights
The goals of the CLS Environmental Sustainability Program are to increase understanding of our natural environment and its resources, to educate the school and greater community about environmentally responsible behavior, and to offer educational activities for the community to become better stewards of our natural resources and to develop a more environmentally sustainable campus. The student run program supports, promotes, and helps run and monitor the recycling and composting efforts on campus, helps conserve energy and water, and organizes community activities such as an annual Earth Day celebration, monthly curbside recycling in our carpool lines, and participation in the Green Cup Challenge. Additionally, students, faculty and staff are also involved with the on-campus community garden.
As a school, our environmental educational programs are woven into nearly every facet of our school calendar. Announcements, demonstrations, and training regularly occur during faculty/staff meetings and school assemblies. Additionally, various grade level activities are often created in an effort to help support our community education in the area of environmental stewardship and sustainability. As an example, the entire middle school spent a month last year investigating, discussing, and learning about water and water quality both locally and globally. During these discussions issues of contaminant leaching, solid waste, and chemical runoff all reinforced our responsibility to reduce waste, promote reuse and recycling, and to use natural/green products. Quarterly updates are sent via email to the entire school noting progress on our environmental sustainability efforts. As our program is now just over a year old, specific financial costs/benefits have not yet been fully calculated. It is known, however, that we have not encountered any increase in expenses as a result of our greening efforts, and we are confident that our waste handling costs will decrease here in our second year.

Charlotte Convention Center: Our energy management program is state-of-the-art working with our partner Johnson Controls on efficient management of the heat & air system (regulate center at 72 degrees); as well as scheduled operation of lights based on activity in the building. Glass in the facility is classified as low 'E' - energy friendly - controls UV light flow into center. Run lights at 50% and no HVAC during move-in and move-out to exhibit halls. Run escalators in the building based on occupancy and event needs. Installed auto flushers throughout facility in our water conservation efforts. Install of water faucet aerators on every faucet in building to reduce water usage. Installation of 21 variable speed controls (20 HP to 50 HP) on motors that operate the HVAC system, reducing energy usage and emissions. Buying foods locally (with the recent addition of the Famers Fresh Market some of our offerings of local products has expanded considerably.) Catering menus offer organic and locally grown options. Local and regional beer and wine selections. Excess food product is donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, who distributes to local shelters. Time Warner Cable Arena: Sensor faucets and flush valves were designed into the arena at construction. All building lighting is controlled with a low voltage control system. This allows us to control lighting groups at specific times for use. Variable speed drives were designed into the air handlers and pump motor and one chiller at the time of construction. Fluorescent lighting is being utilized throughout the arena instead of incandescent lighting. Where incandescent lighting was used, we have decreased the wattage of the bulbs, some as much as half or more. We are in the early stages of replacing some of the incandescent lighting with LED technology. All regular incandescent light bulbs have been changed to compact fluorescents. The wattage has been lowered in all of the suites from 50-watt bulbs to 35-watt bulbs. The number of lamps in the marshalling area lights has been reduced from six to two lamps. All of the 250-watt bulbs at the escalators were changed to compact fluorescents. Time schedules and photocell control outside lighting. We try to wait as late in the day as possible before turning on general building lighting and scoreboard and televisions.
Charlotte Convention Center: Bind and recycle all cardboard and have a separate 40 yard dumpster allocated for this exclusively. Recycle approximately 800 pallets per year. Office areas recycle paper, aluminum cans and power down computers at night. Use printers and copiers that are environmentally efficient in use of power - recycle toner cartridges. Recycle lights bulbs and batteries. All cooking oil is recycled. Food and Beverage areas recycle plastic, glass and aluminum.
Charlotte Convention Center: 95% of cleaning supplies are environmentally safe and biodegradable. Installed 19 'blend centers' to dispense cleaning chemicals that are green certified. Microfiber cleaning materials used and Hepa filters installed in all vacuum cleaners. Pest control vendors selected based on safe environmental practices. Paper products (housekeeping) - 100% post consumer recycled toilet paper and paper towels throughout the building. Installed 120 'foam soap' dispensers using green certified soap, which require less water to rinse. Utilize environmentally friendly company for staff uniform cleaning - they have a waste water treatment plant on the facility that treats water prior to releasing it back into the county water system. NFSI & USGBC approved walk-off mats are installed at every building entrance. All business cards, letterhead and envelopes are printed on 60% recycled - 30% post consumer paper. Usage of 65% post consumer recycled paper napkins (Hoffmaster) and (Express Nap) or use cloth napkins whenever possible. All new equipment purchased is rated energy star compliant; our dishwashers installed in 2007 reduced water consumption by more than 66%. Time Warner Cable Arena: At the current time, the chemicals being used by CRVA at the Arena are approximately 85% green or green certified. We are working with our suppliers to find the best green product to serve our needs with a goal of becoming 100% green.

We have placed multiple recycling containers near the areas where waste is generated. Also, our products that we sell (Freightliner/Fuso/W. Star Trucks) are the highest EPA compliant trucks in the industry.

Our company is set up to recycle all different types of ferrous & non-ferrous metals. We have been doing this on a daily basis since December of 2008 by purchasing, sorting, and shipping each type of metal to its designated smelter, refinery and/or mill. Recycling of metals is our primary business; however we also take part in recycling of plastics, paper, cardboard, and wood. Being that our Company Phrase is "The Solution to All Your Scrap Metal Needs", Custom Recycling specializes in putting together programs for Small to Large Businesses as well as individuals, so we can be your one stop shop for all of your recycling needs.
Our warehouse is systematically organized with a specific location, box, or container for each type of metal. This makes it easy for employees to place the material in the proper location once it is processed. We also follow the same procedure for non-metallic recyclables used by employees such as paper, plastic, glass, and cardboard. This setup is available externally for customers or visitors to use as well. When customers bring in metal to sell us and they have other materials with them that they are going to throw out, we encourage them to use the facilities that we have in place at our expense. This way, we know the material is being recycled properly. We also educate our customers on what materials they can bring in to our location, as many are not aware of the value of unused items that are currently stored in their garage or attic. This not only produces revenue for the Customer but also stimulates the economy. It also educates the customer and everyone the customer discusses their new found source of income with.
Although the majority of what we purchase is metal from our customers, we also make sure that we purchase "Green Products" for warehouse and office areas. This practice has educated our employees on the benefit of purchasing these products. We have not noticed an impact on our company by purchasing "Green Products" as of yet, but as we continue to grow in size, we will most certainly notice a difference.
When becoming a member of the Custom Recycling team each employee is educated on how important recycling is for the economy, environment, future generations, and the entire world. With this being said, each employee understands how important it is to cut down on daily waste and use the environmentally friendly products and services that we have to offer. We also encourage that employees participate in the same type of recycling programs at their place of residence.

Our goal at Earth Farms is ultimately to have an impact on our society by recycling as much compostable products as possible. For that reason we offer local area schools, restaurants and other food preparing facilities the ability to participate in our compost recycling program. Once engaged with our recycling program, Earth Farms will deliver you a compost container to your facility for items such as food scraps and compostable products (cups, plates and silverware). On a weekly basis your container will be picked up and emptied by Earth Farms and the products will be brought back to our facility and composted.
-Promoting to our employees and to the community the need to "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". Recycling food waste provides an end product that can heal our soil and save our precious water. Buying locally grown and organic produce will reduce our carbon footprint. -Educate our children in our schools to practice these standards that will be a way of life tomorrow.
-Earth Farms uses Bio Diesel in its equipment to help with the emissions and using recycled products in our offices. -Growing its own organic produce, we show we care and there is an alternative to chemical
Earth Farms places a high emphasis on educating our community about composting and recycling. Not many weeks pass throughout the year that we don’t have tours at our facility to help engage our community in the practice of recycling. We also hold composting seminars at local schools and businesses to teach how they can also reduce their carbon footprint. On the back end, we also donate many loads of our finished product to local facilities, so they can see firsthand how composting can make a difference in our community.

Here at Gita Sporting Goods, we strive to be responsible and reduce our waste whenever we get a chance. In addition to our regular recycle bins, which are placed in many different areas of our facilities from the kitchen to our warehouse, we have implemented the following programs: Carbon Fiber Recycling – Just this year we have started recycling our carbon fiber waste from crashed/defective bicycled frames. This is still a very new concept in our industry, as carbon fiber recycling is somewhat new in itself. We have partnered up with a recycler in South Carolina who accepts our frames and properly disposes of them, so that the materials can be reused. So far this year, we have recycled close to 500 lbs of carbon fiber and anticipate recycling more as we move forward with this initiative. Catalog/Cardboard Recycling – Over the years we have used catalogs in order to get out information about the products that we distribute. Sadly, we have also stacked up piles of unused/old ones as well. Thankfully, we didn’t just dump them in the trash to get rid of them because now our cardboard recycler has offered to accept these as well. Once every 3-4 weeks, we have a cardboard recycler who visits our loading dock and hauls away at least one flatbed full of recyclables. Sometimes he makes a couple of trips because of the amount of cardboard that we have. Reuse or Recycle – When at all possible, we will reuse any and all packaging materials that we can. Being a distribution center/importer, we receive many packages on a weekly basis. In some cases, we can simply reuse the boxes that the product comes in. We save used boxes for as long as we can until they can be used for outgoing shipments. In the event that the box/materials are not useable, we place them in the recycle pile. We have even gone as far as to set up shipping profiles with our shippers using the dimensions of the boxes that we commonly receive and reuse. Electronic Recycling – Just like the carbon fiber recycling, this year we started recycling old electronics that have been replace din our office. We have recycled old computers, computer monitors, phones, lights and even some television sets. IN addition to recycling what we had here in the office, we invited any employees to bring in any electronics that they would like to recycle since some were unsure of how they could recycle them on their own. Ink Cartridge/Toner Recycling – As an office, we tend to go through our fair share of ink and toner cartridges. We continue to recycle these through our vendors. Over the last few years, vendors/stores have made it easier and easier to do this, and in most cases, make it profitable, as they will either discount the replacement cartridge or give us a credit for a future purchase.
Gita has always strived to be Eco friendly. We encourage our employees in and out of the office to be conscious of their possible waste and opportunities to minimize them. From tagging our e-mail signatures with reminders to not print unless necessary to taking the extra second to lo9ok for the “made out of recycled material” label when purchasing office supplies, all of our employees can say that they are doing their fair share in and out of the office.

Greystar's Sustainability Strategy includes the following: Greystar Green Awards Program – The Awards Program is a cornerstone of the overall strategy, and provides the means for accurately tracking and reporting specific sustainability practices in place at each community and corporate office. The program also provides guidelines for choosing the right blend of practices based on the uniqueness of the community, as well as the owner’s preferences. It was rolled out in 2012 and about 75% of our communities company-wide participate fully. Over 150 communities have earned the Greystar Green Award. Property Assessments – An analysis of current energy/water consumption, which would be performed by an external resource, provides recommendations and baseline data that the owner, Community Manager, and RPM can use for making operational changes and capital improvements that promote sustainability. Greystar’s “Redefining Green” policies – Policies are intended to promote consistency in our green practices/initiatives across the Company, and reinforce Greystar’s philosophy around sustainability. The “Redefining Green” policies are incorporated into the Operational Policies & Procedures Manual. Data Monitoring and Benchmark Reporting – Using NWP's UtilitySmart and the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager systems, coupled with the Greystar Green Awards program, this component provides for objective and on-going tracking of results. Communication & Education – Critical to the success and endurance of the sustainability strategy is a solid plan for the initial roll-out and implementation of the strategy and programs, as well as an on-going plan of communication, education, and promotion. With multiple audiences (e.g. team members, residents, clients, investors/partners), this component will include a variety of vehicles and message points, using the Redefining Green tag line and logo.
Recycling: Paper, light bulbs, scrap metal, cardboard, plastic and aluminum products, batteries, and toner cartridges are recycled. We also utilize suppliers that recycle appliances and carpet/pads. Valet Waste provides doorstep recycling and we have recycling containers available in common areas. Waste Reduction: online payments, online lease renewals, e-brochures, using iPads for tours, email communication instead of paper newsletters/notifications, distribute reusable cups/water bottles instead of disposable ones, utilize low flow showers and water saving toilets, and installation of irrigation monitoring systems Buying Green: green cleaning supplies, recycled or eco-friendly flooring and furniture, LED lighting, recycled paper and reusable bags and bottles/cups
Greystar is a partner with the EPA's ENERGY STAR program and builds US Green Building Council LEED-rated multi-family housing communities. We utilize green cleaning supplies and purchase both interior and outdoor furniture that is at least partially made of recyclable materials. We distribute recycled shopping bags, utilize LED lighting, use washable cups/bottles instead of disposable ones, and use recycled paper. For our residents, these practices are attractive because they are synonymous with living in a modern, new community. From the perspective of ownership, these practices are attractive because they produce a substantial cost savings for the property.

We will continue to display the wipe out waste signage throughout our office space and provide compost bins and a compost pile on site. We will also include in our internal emails information about how to recycle and what the "green" options are for purchasing office materials. We also already do and will continue to recycle everything in our construction waste stream that can be recycled and minimize the waste that cannot be recycled. Habitat Charlotte employs a Green Committee that is dedicated to making environmentally sound choices throughout the affiliate. The Green Committee consists of Habitat employees, volunteers, and leaders and professionals in the environmental sector.
Habitat Charlotte is committed to using green building and office products when possible including Forest Service Council certified woods, recycled paper, recycled insulation, low flow water fixtures, low VOC paints and stains, recycled content gypsum board, longer life shingles, durable siding, durable flooring with low VOC adhesive, Green Label Plus carpet and padding, environmentally friendly office cleaning supplies, compact fluorescent light bulbs, etc. Although many of these products are readily available in the marketplace, they are often more expensive than conventional materials, however, Habitat Charlotte has made a commitment to use only those products despite the additional cost. Habitat Charlotte is also launching a residential solar photovoltaic program to further reduce its and its homeowners’ environmental footprint.
Yes, weatherization and other homeownership classes, and LEED project experience classes. Joey's is a waste oil disposal site for other shops and mechanics. Waste oils and transmission fluids are burned in our "Clean Burn Heater" to heat our work spaces in the cooler months. When the waste oils exceed our need for heat, Safety Kleen recycles the excess and the proceeds are donated to Wounded Warriors' "Flags Across the Nation: Blankets for Recovery" program supplies. We crush our filters in house and recycle them with FCC Environmental. We have just started a "Go Green" Oil Change Special to promote the use of next generation motor oil that is made from 50% used motor oil. The special includes a nitrogen tire refill, which saves on fuel consumption and cost. Our bays are cooled in warmer months with Porta-Cool fans. They use recirculated water instead of gas or Freon to cool the air. Our bay doors are open to naturally light work spaces reducing energy consumption for overhead lighting. Quality fluid capture equipment limits environment exposure to auto fluids. Our gravel drive encourages natural absorption of rainwater and limits funoff issues. We use programmable thermostats in our offices. We utilize a biodegradable parts cleaner, which uses microbes to break down grease on parts and tools. We just became certified by NAPA as a Certified Green Garage.
We purchase DELL ink cartridges that can be back-shipped and reused or recycled. We purchase promotional items that are made of post-consumer materials, i.e. our pens. We limit our expsoure to Styrofoam products by supplying coffee mugs for employees and water fountains instead of purchasing bottled water. We use remanufactured parts rather than new when possible.

Junk Rescue services a broad range of Charlotte customers with multiple facets of recycling. Currently, we provide a weekly recycling pick-up service for businesses that want to minimize their waste stream by recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum, plastics, and glass. We are capable of going inside and retrieving the bins on a floor to floor basis, as well. We also provide bulk item removal services for customers wanting to purge excess materials, or clean out a certain room, storage unit, garage, attic, etc. These items are taken to our warehouse where they will be sorted and separated to be donated, reused, recycled, broken down and recycled, utilized by an artist, or lastly landfilled. We try to offer a one stop shop for customers. For example, one of our customers in a downtown tower, utilizes our services for floor to floor recycling, cardboard recycling, bulk item pick ups, and fluorescent bulb recycling. Once our services were offered, with clean bins and reliable employees, tenants began to take more interest in the recycling initiative. Making recycling clean and easy for customers, helps participation levels increase dramatically.
With every person we touch, we want to express what we as a company were founded by, which are the same values shared by the Wipe Out Waste Programs. These values are found with employees that we hire, which helps spread these initiatives to customers we do pick-ups for. Our company's backbone is - Reuse>Recycle>Break Down Into Recyclable Elements>Can An Artist Utilize>Landfill. This helps people understand that their products aren't taken straight to a landfill like a lot of companies. If we aren't capable of handling certain materials, we have green resources that we will always recommend, so that these items are disposed of properly.
All of our bins purchased are made from 100% recycled plastics. It's a statement to customers that assures them of our program. It's one thing to recycle, but to encourage the purchase of products made from recyclable materials, just by educating, certainly helps with word of mouth referrals. Our main office was furnished through all reused materials from pick-ups. This isn't necessarily 'purchasing', but I think that it is very relevant. These items include the carpet, paint, computer, monitors, office desk, office chairs, filing cabinets, dry erase boards, corkboards, recycling receptacles, etc. Anyone that meets in the office is told of this, to show our commitment to the green initiative. It is a great story that helps encourage others to see the value of reuse or recycled products.
Junk Rescue offers to all customers the opportunity for a lunch meeting to help educate tenants and anyone interested in the proper techniques of recycling. This may include education on the materials accepted/unaccepted, ideas on how to properly dispose of products that aren't accepted, bin placement techniques, or how to encourage their customers to increase their recycling participation. We had a customized bin made from all recycled material for a client that wanted to encourage even more. This bin was placed in their mailroom and included compartments for phones, batteries, plastic bags, light bulbs, paper, bottles, and cans. The bin placement has generated more recycling for this particular building.

In 2008, MG&C became the first large law firm in North and South Carolina to be recognized as an ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge Partner by the American Bar Association's (ABA) Environment, Energy and Resources Section for the firm's participation in the "WasteWise" program. By committing to "practicing green," MG&C has adopted policies and practices that meet the standards set by these organizations and will help ensure the sustainability of our planet's resources. MG&C is reducing its carbon footprint by means of reducing, reusing and recycling, purchasing environmentally friendly products, conserving energy, water and natural resources, and utilizing video conferencing for internal and external meetings. The firm has converted internal distribution of reports, faxes, newsletters and bulletins from hard-copy to electronic, as well as changed the default settings on printers to be two-sided, reducing paper purchases by half. MG&C uses recycled paper for printing, copying, marketing materials, holiday cards and cleaning/bathroom paper products. Disposable cups for employees and visitors have been replaced with reusable coffee and beverage
MG&C is reducing waste by cutting back on paper; this is done through electronic distribution of materials, as well as double-sided printing. The firm also has conveniently placed recycling bins for employees and visitors to easily recycle their items. MG&C is also committed to purchasing environmentally friendly products, including recycled paper for printing, copying, marketing materials, holiday cards and cleaning/bathroom products. Our clients are reminded of our Green Project through reusable cups when they visit, or the recycled paper the newsletter is printed on with the MGC Green logo, as well as through our website.
As stated above, MG&C is committed to purchasing environmentally friendly, or "green," products. These purchases range from the paper products in the bathroom to the type of paper the firm's quarterly client newsletter is printed on. By purchasing environmentally friendly products, employees are constantly reminded of our Green Project. This results in employee engagement in the project, with an emphasis on electronic distribution of materials, recycling paper and other products and conserving printed materials as much as possible.
MG&C recently rolled out MGConnect, a Sharepoint site where employees can interact with colleagues and find the information they need with the click of a mouse. MG&C's Green Project is featured on Sharepoint and the firm's green policy is explained. Future plans for MGConnect include tips and facts that will continue to encourage employees to be a part of the Green Project. Prior to MGConnect, the Green Project was featured in many of the firm's internal newsletters to employees.

We began our recycling program 8/4 and have been finding more ways to recycle ever since. Most of our waste comes from brewing including the packaging that our materials come in (cardboard primarily). Our brewers go through packages of Gatorade a week which used to create a lot of plastic waste that now gets recycled. We are also now finding ways to recycle our water which is one of our largest waste components. When making a batch of beer, we are now making two beers out of the same original batch, the second having a lower ABV.
Food trucks are our source of food at the tap room for our customers. These food trucks represent our eco-friendly standards as well. We have worked with a few of the trucks to serve their food in more sustainable packaging. We also have open discussions on how we can better each part of our process to be more sustainable.
We went with an energy efficient dryer in each of our bathrooms to eliminate paper waste. We have purchased "green" plastic cups made from post product waste for our run club. Our tap room uses only glassware to cut down on our plastic waste. We purchased reusable glass growlers for our patrons. We are able to recycle them by using them again and if the customers don't return them then there is a message on the growler to recycle it. We have a water fountain instead of water bottles for employees. All of these purchases have led us to incorporate even more sustainable practices into our everyday lives.

Our eclectic shabby chic décor lends itself to refurbished (second hand) furniture from the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store which can be spotted throughout the salon including our stylist stations. We serve filtered water instead of bottled, participate in saving hair to be made in to hair-mats which are used to clean up oil spills (when there is a need), compost and incorporate hair (which can be used for plant fertilizer), we participate in programs such as Locks of Love and Pantene’s that turn hair donations in to wigs for cancer patients, carry an eco-friendly product line, offer a discount for refilling shampoos and conditioners rather than purchasing a new one. We sponsor a recycling dumpster, which has been a HUGE success in the neighborhood. It is always filled to the brim by the time our pick-up is scheduled. We are now working on raising awareness of nearby bins that may be underutilized for when ours gets full.
Sponsoring a recycling dumpster really exposes us to a fantastic opportunity to get the word out about W.O.W. initiatives and a convenient way to practice what we preach. We visit the local restaurants and shops regularly with flyers, educating them about the dumpster and inviting neighborhood use. Meeting on the Greenification team is always a great way to cross promote initiatives. We have salon meetings weekly where we pass on all relevant information to our staff informing them about what’s going on, so they know and can share with their clients in casual discussion. We are active with social media and use this as a platform to share information, posts, initiatives, tips, events and community opportunities to get involved. We also touch on this during our initial clients’ visits as a part of our salon tour, and send out a monthly newsletter with relevant, interesting highlights.
Aside from bringing back info from W.O.W. events, meetings, and website to our staff, we have recently discussed touring the recycling center as a team to gain more information and participate in a green experience together in hopes of reinforcing and encouraging waste reduction and discussion. Other than that we do not have any formal educational programs that we participate in aside from researching and partnering with local groups such the NoDa greenification team that is a wealth of knowledge and a great resource as well as our product line Davines

Internally we have been promoting environmentally responsible practices that employees can use in the office and at home. Our monthly meetings aim to promote most of these activities and carefully placed recycling facilities are provided to encourage individuals to participate. If we get this Wipe Out Waste recognition, we will use Wipe Out Waste promotional materials posted about the office and in e-mails to encourage further participation internally and by our clients.
We actively pursue purchasing of green products. Most of the time, green products are slightly more expensive than the traditional product, but we are finding through bulk purchases and coupons that so far we’ve been able to pay the same price (and in a few cases cheaper) for recycled materials. Unfortunately, in this economy, we can only afford to transition to 30% recycled paper at this time, but do provide our clients the option of using 100% recycled and do aim for 100% recycled paper once the economy improves.
Yes, we have monthly office meetings whereby sustainability issues are discussed and any updates on the programs we pursue (such as this one) or recommendations for individuals to follow are brought to the attention of staff.

We will post waste reduction information in the common areas of our office, as well as place recyclable bins in more visible places. This will include an area for batteries, bulbs, and other such material. We will also work to further reduce the amount of plastic wrap used in the warehouse, and recycle as much of it as possible. There will also be a link to the WOW page on smithturf.com, as well as information for our employees about the importance of proper waste reduction methods.
STI's commitment to purchasing "Green Products" began with our EnviroSmart line, which directs and educates our customers toward product lines that promote healthy landscapes and keep the environment "greener". For instance, we promote water-saving irrigation products, turf hybrid equipment with no CO2 emissions, and lighting lines that cut energy consumption through the use of LED lamps. We reduce wood packaging waste by shipping or reusing the professional products in returnable steel crating and much of the equipment we receive come in reusable packaging from our suppliers.
Yes, STI offers professional continuing education training on design, installation, troubleshooting & service, and business management to contractors in the residential/commercial irrigation, lighting, water garden, drainage, and floating fountain businesses.

Our business is in itself a recycling effort – we provide a location for people to trade in their old books and acquire new (to them), previously-owned ones. We’ve arranged for a charity to pick up once a week, so that we can offer an outlet for the books we’re unable to take. We generate one black trash bag full of trash every 10 days to 2 weeks. We either reuse or recycle everything else (mostly paper). We consolidate our orders for new books and order once a week to cut down on shipments. We re-use customer boxes and bags whenever possible.
Our whole purpose is to encourage people to re-circulate their used books. We also encourage people to donate unwanted items to charity, both by providing such a service at our store and encouraging that option for people who don’t want to trade in their books. We have book rack tote bags that we sell at cost and give away to those making large purchases to encourage our customers to use reusable totes.
We refill/recycle our printer cartridges at a nearby store.
We keep cardboard boxes in the cashier area to collect waste paper. Our employees are trained to recycle whenever possible: to use the boxes for recyclable paper, to reuse customer bags if possible. We print on the back of printer paper as well as the front and some employees bring such paper from home to reuse. Blank half-sheets of paper are used as scratch paper.

We try to minimize our use of water and electricity by turning the lights off in rooms that are not being used and utilizing energy efficient lighting. We also use all eco-friendly cleaners and laundry detergent and only recycled paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, printer paper, etc). Our marketing materials are also printed on recycled materials. We minimize the use of paper towels by purchasing smaller sheets and when clients enjoy the beverages in bottles we provide for them, we recycle their bottles. We also use recycled paper cups and lids in our lobby coffee machine. Sensitive documents are shredded and an independent company is contracted to pick our shredded paper up for recycling (since it cannot go in the Char Meck recycling bins).
We advertise we are Wipe Out Waste Ambassadors and have information on our website and facebook page about the program. Staff is aware of the program and our dedication to waste reduction/recycling and efficiency. We sponsor a community recycling drop-off center (arranged through the wipe out waste program) behind our business, where we recycle all cardboard, paper, plastic and metal cans from our hospital and encourage all of our neighboring businesses to do the same.
We have written protocols in place to buy all green/recycled products and recycle all materials in the hospital possible. We use detergents and cleaning products that are eco-friendly and light bulbs that are eco-friendly, as well as natural cat litters that are biodegradable for our hospitalized cats. We also recently switched all of our paper products from traditional to recycled – printer paper, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, etc.

In order to actively promote Wipe Out Waste, the management team plans to include information in our quarterly tenant newsletters about the program. In the future, we hope to conduct more waste stream audits in order to share the results with our tenants and hope to improve our waste stream diversion.
LakePointe Corporate Center’s management office is committed to purchasing recycled content office paper. We also purchase compact fluorescent bulbs for use throughout the building. Also, over 85 percent of our cleaning products and materials that are purchased for building use are Green Seal GS-37, Green Seal GS-09, Green Seal GS-41 or Green Seal GS-40.
We conducted a waste stream audit for our properties and found that the minimized use of disposable service ware products is an area we can strongly improve on. Currently, our anchor tenant, The Lash Group, uses drinking cups that cannot be recycled by our vendor. In the future, the building management team has set a goal to discuss the benefits of switching over to paper cups that can be recycled.

These are the current projects we are undertaking to make UNC Charlotte more sustainable: http://facilities.uncc.edu/real-estate-land-use/sustainability/sustainable-campus/sustainable-campus Collection of over forty items for recycling throughout campus. http://facilities.uncc.edu/recycling-housekeeping/recycling/recycle-unc-charlotte/recycle-unc-charlotte Desk side bins are provided for all staff (over 3000). Students living in residential housing are provided with a recycling bin for their room. Academic Year 20010-2011 – Housekeeping removed all trash cans from classrooms; everyone now brings their trash and recyclables to central area. Recycling increased 25 % in academic buildings. Recycling bins for aluminum cans, plastic bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, and steel cans are located in all buildings, parking decks, at recreational fields, and along heavy-traffic paths and walkways on campus. Food Waste Composting Program. http://facilities.uncc.edu/recycling-housekeeping/recycling/programs/composting/composting Utilizing two in-vessel composters at one of the food prep kitchen, the recycling and kitchen staff collect pre- and post-consumer food waste from this dining hall to be composted. Untreated sawdust from the College of Architecture is collected and used as a bulking agent for the compost. Last year, we composted 7,488 pounds of food waste, and 1,978 pounds of sawdust that was generated on campus. This compost is used as a soil amendment on campus. Construction & Demolition/Debris recycling program. http://facilities.uncc.edu/recycling-housekeeping/recycling/programs/construction-and-demolition/construction-and-demolition-re UNC Charlotte’s C&D recycling program has been expanding since it began in 2004. In the past two years, C&D recycling rates for new construction projects have consistently topped 80%. The University has begun to incorporate deconstruction requirements into renovation and demolition projects by working with Habitat for Humanity and other local charities. In addition, the program is implementing procedures for recycling ceiling tiles from both small and large projects, and has currently received approval from Armstrong to accept tiles from half of the buildings on campus. ReUse Programs – 26,813 pounds reused in 2009-2010 Recycling Office collected 17,084 pounds of non-perishable food, clothing, furniture, and small appliances during student Move-Out in May of 2011. Food was donated to area food banks and the other items were donated to Salvation Army. Since the Move-Out for Charity collection began in 2000, we have donated over 164,150 pounds of items for reuse Volunteer and Community Service The Recycling Office volunteer program had over 400 volunteers for the 2011-2012 academic year translating into over 1000 hours of volunteering for the Recycling Department. Students assisted with campus clean-ups, educational and promotional events, created promotional materials and assisted the recycling crew with collections. By focusing on the student’s interest and talent we are able not only to retain volunteers but they encourage their friends to volunteer with our department. Do you conduct Education programs? Post and/or distribute miscellaneous Waste Reduction Information/posters. Ensure site waste reduction activities are implemented.
The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling was started by students in 1992. Originally, they collected aluminum only. Since then, we have grown to 16 staff members that are made up of eleven Recycling Technicians and 5 administrative staff. In 2011-2012, we collected over 2 million pounds of material. In addition to the 40 items collected for recycling from the 1500 recycling bins in the academic and administrative buildings. We have an extensive construction and demolition recycling program, a demonstration composting program and we hold several educational events throughout the year. Our sustainability program officially began in 2008. We are currently completing our first Climate Action Plan and the Chancellor has signed on to the Presidents Climate Commitment.
The university has a number of avenues and opportunities that it pursues regarding sustainability purchasing practices. The State of North Carolina Executive Order 156 stipulates that state agencies “shall strive to [c] procure goods and services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment, including products made wholly or in part from recycled materials….” This executive order is carried out by the following programs: green cleaning products purchasing, recycled and remanufactured products purchasing program, electric vehicle purchasing, inventory and surplus programs. In 2007, UNC Charlotte purchased recycled content goods and services in the following commodity areas. The below does not encompass all “green purchasing”, but highlights the major areas. Commodity Area • Remanufactured toner cartridges • Carpet (recycled pile, backing or cushion) • Compost and mulch products • Print orders using recycled content paper • Office paper and envelops (recycled content) • Towel, tissue and related products (recycled content) • Miscellaneous paper products (recycled content) • Electric and E85 Vehicles • Green cleaning products (Housing and Residence Life information) • Office products The University’s Inventory Control and Surplus Property (ICSP) department plays an important role within the Materials Management as they are instrumental in the disposition of used goods from the university. ICSP is responsible for picking up unwanted UNCC property from campus departments and redistributing surplus back to University departments as needed. The final responsibility of the department is to sell unwanted goods to the public. In 2007-2008, ICSP sold or redistributed 10,519 items. OUR MOST RECENT PROGRAM – Downsizing and removing the bin The idea to remove trash cans from all the classrooms and reduce the size of the trash bin in all the offices grew out of meetings as our department developed ways to increase efficiencies for housekeeping while increasing recycling rates. Working together, Housekeeping and Recycling created a fundamental shift in our operations by taking the focus off the trash and putting it on resources and recycling. Everyone on this campus participates in the program by bringing their trash and recycling to a central location. This simple shift has increased recycling of bottles and cans in all academic buildings by 25% over the last 2 years and increased office recycling by 10-15% in the last few months. Each person at UNC Charlotte is an integral part of the team and essential to creating a GREEN campus. Our first pilot was to remove trashcans from all classrooms and pair them up with recycling bins in the hallway. Our recycling employees only work during normal school hours, so we were unable to service recycling bins in the classroom. In previous studies, convenience was the number one factor for people to recycle or not. With the old model, it was much more convenient to throw bottles, cans and paper in the trash bin since it was readily available in the classrooms. Due to the success of the classroom trash bin removal, we began to think about office recycling and how a similar change would have the same positive affect. With that, we decided to bring in a smaller trash can.

We currently have on site an ABC container for mixed recycling of Aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers, copy paper and form recycling and cardboard recycling. We also provide containers for electronics recycling. Fluorescent tubing is gathered and taken to local lighting companies on a monthly basis. All ABC and paper recyclable material is collected on a daily and weekly basis.
E-mails are sent out bi-annually encouraging employees to utilize the various recycling bins around the building. This helps in weekly collection of ABC and paper products.
When the time comes to replace appliances, mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment, we always replace with a green product. Because of the age of our building and the amount of old fixtures installed, we are only able to upgrade to green products as current items age out.

Whole Foods Market- Sharon Road is working to achieve Zero-Waste certification through the EPA by Earth Day 2014, which means that 90% of our waste will be diverted from landfills. Currently, we are establishing a base-line, which will help us determine the next steps. O'Leary Group Waste, Earth Farms Organic and Food Donation Connection are three great partners who take our recycling, compost, spent grease and food for non-profit organizations, like Second Harvest, in the Charlotte area. It is a combination of customer and back-of-house waste reduction that will help us achieve our goal.
We've participated in several Green/Earth Day events throughout Charlotte, including the Ballantyne Earth Day event, Green Drinks and Clean Air Carolina 5K. We also hosted our own Earthlings Unite event to help educate customers about the importance of waste reduction. To coincide with Earth month, we hosted a Green Cleaning product swap, which helped to educate customers about the ingredients in their cleaners and the transparency we bring to the cleaning products we sell in the store using the Eco-Scale. In the store, we also encourage customers to use reusable bags, to purchase bulk in their own containers and to use washable plates and silverware when dining in our cafe. In addition, we hosted the Wipe Out Waste Green Ambassador meeting in which we talked about how Whole Foods Market is reducing waste and elements that could easily be transferred to other community businesses. It also gave other likeminded professionals an opportunity to see our waste systems up close.
One of the greatest examples is Envirolog. They are a company based in Georgia which receives bales of cardboard from our stores throughout the South Region. In turn they produce an environmentally-friendly fire log using the cardboard that we sell at our stores, essentially closing the loop when it comes to waste. Preserve buys our #5 plastics and then makes toothbrushes, razors and plasticware (spoons, forks, cups, etc.) that we in turn sell in our stores. Farmer D Organics receives food waste from our Georgia stores. Farmer D Organics processes the food waste and once it has been turned into nutrient dense compost, we sell bags of the compost to our customers in our garden centers throughout the South Region. We are hoping very soon to be able to sell Earth Farm Organics compost as well, bringing this closed loop, closer to home. All three of these products are creating win-win partnerships with our vendors and our environment.
Here at Whole Foods Market, one of our core values is: We practice and advance environmental stewardship. We see the necessity of active environmental stewardship so that the earth continues to flourish for generations to come. Each store has a Green Mission Team, which is made up of team members from throughout the store who are interested in helping everyone live out this core value. We meet monthly to plan, problem-solve and get excited about what we are doing to help the environment. Mostly recently, Clare Duncan has created easy to identify shadowboxes of what is recyclable, compostable or landfill bound from products and waste that is generated in our store. Earth Farms Organics is also working with us to create a "system" for our cafe areas to collect liquids so customers can separate food from recyclable materials.
