District Banquet

Conservation Exhibit   The 2014 District Banquet was on May 5, 2014.  The
   event was held at Reedy Creek Park Indoor Shelter #3. 
  
   Mecklenburg SWCD recognized contest winners 
   and individuals, organizations, and businesses in  
   Mecklenburg County for their outstanding 
   conservation achievements.


2014 Outstanding Environmental Educator of the Year Award

Christopher Matthews is the recipient of the Outstanding Environmental Educator of the Year Award.  Chris is a Natural Resource Manager for Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.  He is responsible for management, strategic planning, and operations of the nature Preserves Division, which incorporates Mecklenburg County's nature preserve system, Environmental Education, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Sections.

Highlights of Chris' Major Job Accomplishments:
Chris is an Instructor of Central Carolina's Master Naturalist Program.  As Division Director for Nature Preserves & Natural Resources, Chris leads a professional staff at three nature centers that provide roughly 5,000 Environmental Education programs per year for 50,000+ participants.

Chris is a speaker in high demand at national and regional conferences.  Chris is an Instructor (numerous courses) at NRPA/NC State prestigious Green School - a two year curriculum for park professionals aimed at educating and creating "greener" Park and Recreation departments across the country in terms of energy efficiencies and savings, water conservation, natural areas management and preservation, sustainable landscaping, and general environmental stewardship.

Chris led a professional staff of technicians and scientists that manage and care for the 21 nature preserves in the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation system.

Chris was a Senior Project Manager at HDR Consulting from 1996-2009 where he became the Vice President responsible for their Habitat Assessment and Restoration Program.

Nominator describes why she feels Chris should be selected as the Outstanding Environmental Educator of the Year:
"The message Chris brings to our community should be shouted from the roof tops.  Chris is an advocate for the County and public service as it relates to development of public policy around environmental stewardship and resource conservation.  Chris has a professional approach to relaying this critical message and should be recognized to further lend credibility to his message."
