You’re #1 In Our Hearts

Mecklenburg CountyHappy Valentine’s Day, Mecklenburg County!

Whether you live here, work here or just visit from time to time, you have to agree that there are lots of reasons to love Mecklenburg County. Here’s a list of the top ten things we love the most –

#10 We love sports, at all levels. We’re proud to be the home of the Carolina Panthers, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Charlotte Knights professional teams. We’ve also got collegiate sports at UNC-Charlotte, Davidson College, Johnson C. Smith University, and Queens University not to mention some of the best high school sports teams around. And, if you want to get off the sidelines and into the game, our park and recreation facilities offer endless opportunities to play whatever sport you heart desires.

#9 We love our libraries; they offer so much more than just books. With 20 locations throughout the County, targeted outreach, and online accessibility, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library creates a community of readers and empowers individuals with free access to information and the universe of ideas.

#8 We love the history of our County. Named in commemoration of the marriage of King George III to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Mecklenburgers signed their own Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (the Meck Dec) on May 20, 1775, declaring their independence from British rule a year before the national Declaration of Independence. The document reportedly vanished in 1800 when a fire destroyed the home of its keeper, generating debate of its existence throughout the years.

#7 We love our pet residents. We love them so much that there are seven parks throughout the County for our dog friends to run off leash, and they’re FREE! We even have an annual festival, Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival, complete with an owner look-a-like contest. We didn’t forget about our equine friends either, there’s 13 miles of trails for horseback riding at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.

#6 The weather. This one doesn’t need a lot of explaining, especially after a weekend like the one we just had – 80 degrees in February is a true Valentine’s Day gift!

#5 Our arts and culture. We are so lucky to have a variety of arts and cultural events all throughout the County. Whether you have a penchant for the visual arts, music, stage performance, or film, there’s something for everyone!

#4 The beach. But wait, Mecklenburg County isn’t on the coast. You’re right, it’s not, but we still have our own, public beach – Ramsey Creek Beach at Ramsey Creek Park on Lake Norman. Officially opened last summer, individuals and families can visit the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day between 10a.m. and 7:30p.m.

#3 Location, location, location. We’re in a good spot. The beach is only a few hours away and the mountains are even closer!

#2 Our parks. That should be pretty obvious since we’ve already mentioned them several times in our countdown, but we love our parks, all 21,000+ acres of them! They come in all shapes and sizes, from small neighborhood parks to large district parks, and offer something for everyone – playgrounds and spray grounds, walking and biking trails, tennis courts, ball fields, dog parks, skate parks, fishing and gardening, traditional golf and disc golf, outdoor pools and lakes and so much more. No matter where you are in Mecklenburg County there is a park close to you.

And finally, the number one thing we love the most about our County is . . .

YOU, our residents. We work for you every day, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
