Flood Insurance Discounts
In Charlotte, Pineville and unincorporated Mecklenburg County, residents of mapped, regulated floodplains get automatic discounts on their flood insurance.

That's because Charlotte, Pineville and Mecklenburg County take part in a voluntary program that rewards communities across the nation for their additional efforts to reduce flood losses. The program is called the Community Rating System (CRS).

House in floodwater

  • Charlotte: up to 25%
  • Pineville: up to 20%
  • Unincorporated Mecklenburg: up to 20%

The CRS program awards points to communities for going beyond minimum requirements in:
  • public information
  • floodplain mapping and floodplain development regulations
  • flood damage reduction and
  • flood preparedness.
More CRS points means bigger flood insurance discount for all residents of that community.

Flood insurance is available to everyone in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The discounts are available to people living in communities that take part in the Community Rating System.

Regular homeowner's or business insurance does not cover flood damage. A separate flood insurance policy is needed. Flood insurance is available inside and outside of mapped floodplains.

The cost of a flood insurance policy depends on the property's risk. Higher risk means higher flood insurance premiums. No matter what your risk is, CRS discounts mean you pay less for flood insurance.
