McAlpine Creek - Sardis Road to Providence Road
A nearly one-mile section of McAlpine Creek received a major makeover to improve water quality. In addition, two storm water ponds near this section of creek were improved and a wetland was enhanced. 

Completed: December 2011

  • Restore the stream path to a more natural design, stabilizing and reshaping banks 
  • Reduce bank erosion
  • Measurably reduce the amount of sediment and other pollutants in McAlpine Creek and some tributaries
  • Preserve open space along the creek
  • Improve aquatic habitat for fish and other wildlife by putting stream structures in the creek that increase oxygen levels within the water
  • Repair storm water ponds and enhance wetlands

McAlpine Creek is on the State's list of impaired waterways because of high levels of bacteria and sediment.    

The amount of storm water runoff and the speed at which that water flows have both been increasing. Fast-moving water had eroded McAlpine's banks, leaving them jagged and unstable. Bank erosion had also caused high levels of soil particles in the water.

Storm Water Services repaired the eroded banks and returned them to a natural state. The stream work will not prevent the creek from flooding. Storm Water Services is repairing the erosion damage and restoring the stream bed and banks. The result will be improved water quality and aquatic habitat.

Retention pond repair
As part of this project, two storm water retention ponds were repaired and nearby wetlands were improved. These Stormwater Control Mea​sures will remove some pollutants from the water. And retention ponds slow the flow of water by holding some excess runoff during heavy rain. That will reduce creek bank erosion.

Total cost: $2.04 million

North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund: $845,000
