Swimming advisories

The following no-swim advisories are in effect for Mecklenburg County area waters:

June 1, 2015: McDowell Cove on Mountain Island Lake

The NO-SWIMMING advisory issued on June 1, 2015 for McDowell Creek Cove on Mountain Island Lake in Mecklenburg County is lifted today.  The advisory had been issued after approximately 2,986 gallons of mostly treated wastewater was discharged into the lake from the Charlotte Water McDowell Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant at 4901 Neck Road in Huntersville.  The plant malfunction was due to a brief power outage to a part of the ultraviolet disinfection system. Charlotte Water has repaired the electrical issue and the plant has returned to normal operations.  Water quality monitoring in the cove is being conducted by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff. Water samples collected in the cove by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ staff reveal that bacteria counts are within safe limits, therefore the swimming advisory has been lifted.
