Data Management

Staff of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) performs field tests for

  • pH
  • temperature
  • dissolved oxygen
  • conductivity
  • turbidity
  • chlorophyll a.

Data is compiled onto field data sheets, attached to a chain of custody form and provided to a Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) Officer with CMSWS on the same day field measurements are collected. Water samples are also collected with field measurements and delivered for analysis to the certified laboratory owned and operated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities located at 4222 Westmont Drive in Charlotte. The laboratory provides finalized data electronically and in hard copy to the QA/QC Officer within 45 days of sample collection. All field and laboratory data received by the QA/QC Officer is compiled, reviewed, verified, validated, and warehoused. Immediately upon receipt of data, the QA/QC Officer reports exceedances of State standards as well as local Action levels to Water Quality Program Supervisors who dispatch staff to identify and eliminate pollution sources. On at least a monthly basis, data is quality assured and added to the Water Quality Data Repository (WQDR). In addition, the QA/QC Officer prepares summaries of data on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis that are used by staff to identify water quality trends for initiation of corrective actions as necessary.
